Chapter 23

Day 87-Noon-Marcus POV

As Amber meets me on the first floor, I notice that she has ditched the dress for a pair of simple pants and a plain grey shirt. Brown boots round out the ensemble, and if I didn’t know better, I’d think she was just one of the many workers we have.

She’s giving me a wide smile while putting away her mind stone. I want to ask who she is messaging, but I don’t want to appear nosy. Shaking off the thought, I take her arm in mine and lead her out of the keep. We pick up our pace as we aim to be outside the walls.

“Where are we going, My Lord?” she asks as we make it to the lower quarter.

“I wanted to check on the quarry. After that, we can head to the tavern,” I reply.

Her beaming smile catches my attention, and I can’t help but chuckle. “Are you laughing at me, My Lord?” Her sudden question makes me laugh more.

“I am, but I’m also not. I think it’s cute when you give me that smile. It’s nice to see you so happy,” I explain.

Her smile widens, which I didn’t know was possible, and she grips my arm tighter. “I’ll always be happy when I’m with you, My Lord.”

“Let’s see if you are still smiling when we get to the quarry.” I leave off the fact that I plan on helping them for a little while.

“Why would I stop smiling?” she asks.

“You’ll see. How are things with you and Nala?”

Her smile falters for a moment. “Things are good. There is a problem we are working through right now. It’s taking a lot of work on both our parts.”

“If you want to talk about it, you have me for the rest of the day,” I offer before turning us north. The walk to the quarry should only take a few minutes, but I slow our pace so she can talk.

“Maybe over a drink we can talk. That might give me the courage I lack.” Her smile fades as she disappears into thought.

As we make it to the quarry, the workers raise their hands in greeting. A solidly built, short man with blonde hair and beard steps up. “My Lord, what brings you out this far?”

“I take it you are the one leading these men?” I ask.

“The name is Wilbur, My Lord. To answer you, yes, I’m taking charge of this operation. With the last influx of residents, we’ve picked up a few more workers.”

“I see that there are ten of you now. Started with just five, right?”

He nods. “Yes, My Lord. Work is getting done faster now, but some of the men need to build up a bit more strength to take on the large boulders.”

I look around the area and notice that they haven’t started on the rock wall yet. “Looks like you are clearing the field first. Where are you storing the stone?”

Wilbur leads us over to a makeshift storage yard. It’s about one hundred feet from the planned entrance to the quarry.
